6O Years of Fashion: Lady's Wear Only**** Sorry Guys.........
By marellen
Introduction:
How has style of clothing changed throughout a decade? Take a journey with me to see what fads were in and what items quickly became history. Within this Hub I thought it would be fun to explore 60 years of women’s clothing. What fads where popular in what decade and attempt to remember what I wore in each decade. So, please help me in remembering what items I have forgotten. I Hope we all get ‘a hoot’ out of this fun hub….
1950's
1950’s: Age: 1 to 8.…..Innocence’s
.….I was born in 1951, the decade of my youth. Here is my list of clothes I can remember wearing.
Peddle Pushers, Mary Jane shoes with white socks, Baby doll pajamas,
Dresses with petticoats or a ruffed slip that always itched. I cried when I wore mine.
Shorts, One piece swimsuit, Jumpers (didn’t we all have one), with different color blouses.
One piece play outfits. US keds….were there any other brands? Salt-water sandals.
1960's
1960’s: Age 9 to 18 School….Junior and High School being the thing….
I wore a school uniform until the 7th grade. So, this took up much of my clothing. Remember those White Bleated Skirts…I think everyone had one. White Go-Go Boots….I didn’t have them but my girlfriend did. Cotton Shifts, that I made. Clogs……I was so cool, Bell-Bottoms jeans, Jumpers, with a white blouse, Surfer shirts….these had big red or blue strips on an oversized white T-shirt.
Cut-off Jeans, Culottes, Saddle shoes, brown and cream. Long knee high colored socks that I wore with my Saddle shoes. Madras shirts and shorts….the color would bleed when they were washed. Tapered jeans,
Paisley prints, Mini skirt or dresses, One piece bathing suit, Pee coat and real sailor pants, Still US Keds and mood rings.
1970's
1970’s: Age 19 to 28 College, working, dating, partying, getting my own apartment…Hippie style and going braless where very popular and my outfits reflected this.
.
Bell bottoms jeans, Flared jeans, Black boots, Long dresses, Mini skirts
Hot pants, Crop and tube tops or sweaters, Famolare shoes,
Platform sandals…..talk about hurting yourself……
Embroidered blouse. Denim shirts. Jumpsuits……..I was hot in these……
Braless mini dresses, Black leotard with my jeans, Flared slacks, Peasant blouses, Bikini, No tennis shoes, I did wear hiking boots ( what was I thinking). Stirrup pants (remember these….they fit under your foot. I remember wearing a suede black boot with them too).
1980's
1980’s: Age 29 to 38 Marriage, kids, divorce, work, you know all the good stuff. NOT!!!
Jeans, Long jean dresses, Body suit…..the most uncomfortable thing I owed. It was like a leotard but snapped under your crotch……ouch.
Leg warmers with oversized sweatshirts, Sweat outfits, Work clothes: slacks, blouses, Suits that had shoulder pads…..everything had shoulder pads.
Jean jacket….that I still have it. I wore long blouses with sweaters over them. You didn’t tuck in the blouses. Paisley prints were in style.
Remember wearing collars up on your blouses. Walking shorts…these were longer than regular shorts. Jean shorts, Pin stripped jeans….they were cool
Small black boots to tuck my jeans in.
Corduroy pants, I wore lots of belts….I still have some….Capezio shoes…everyone had them. Surfer pants…..baggy with elastic waist
Swatch watches….I had these in several colors and Penny loafers.
1990's
1990’s: Age 39 to 48 Work, 2nd Marriage, social life, getting back in the swing of things. Kids starting school, taxi Mom, more conservative or Preppy look.
.
Jeans…I wore jeans for everything and everywhere, except work.
Jean tops that matched my jeans and jackets too. Scarves: I still have most of them. Turtleneck sweaters, Wedge heels were in. Capri’s, Blazers, especially with my jeans.
Black jeans became popular and I could wear these to work. Leather jacket…..still have mine. I don’t think I owed a dress…..Slacks in every color for work. Fleece outfits, Silk blouses, One piece swimsuit, Still didn’t have tennis shoes. Black was my favorite color to wear. Heels
2000
2000’s: Age 49 to 60 Work, semi-retired, Wyoming, back home, cousins, children leaving home and marriage, on-line dating, living with Mom, hot flashes. Most days its just about comfort, but I always try to look good to feel good.
Jeans…..its all about jeans. Capri’s, Black, brown, grey, pastel colors, our my colors, Leather sandals, Black and brown sassy sandals; Black tennis shoes, with Velcro straps. Black heels, Flats shoes, Flowing blouses….that hide things.
No belts and rarely scarves, Love bracelets and have a huge collection.
Some sweaters for winter, and winter scarves. Vests…love them and have a variety. Cowboy boots and hat, but only in Wyoming.
Conculsion
Truthfully, I think clothes for 2000 are mostly the same from the 1980 and 1990 decades. Jeans are a constant item for everyone and the only change is what style of jeans are in at that time. I have worn the same style straight-leg for a few years now because I think they look the best and fell good.
For me the late 60’s and 70’s was my most dramatic wardrobe change. I was young, hanging with the gang, socializing more than any other time. Once you become a Mom and you start to work things change; doesn’t mean you have to become a slop but staying hip usually gets put on the back burner.
It was fun compiling the different fads that most of us tend to follow through the decades. I think history does repeat itself….I often hear women say why didn’t I keep this or that, its back in style. Most of us would need a huge home if we could safe everything. The more active we are like dating, socializing more and working, all of these activities influence how we look and what we wear.
Did I bring back some memories for you ladies? I hope so because it was sure fun compiling this hub…..Talk about a walk down memory lane.

Fiddleman...Thanks for coming by but I think you missed some of the hub. I was having a heck of a time downloading some pic. Hope you can come back for the rest...
What a delightful hub. Loved seeing all of your pictures and remembering back to the clothes that I wore at different stages of my life. I was born in 57 so I remember all of these styles. Awesome Hub!
Hi marellen, yes you bought back some wonderful memories, white go-go boots - I can still feel the thrill of wearing them, I thought I looked so groovy...
And 'hot pants' so sexy if you had the figure for them!
I practically live in jeans these days, boring in comparison.
I enjoyed reminiscing with you, brilliant hub and voting up.
Hi Susan and Movie Master.....So glad you both enjoyed the hub. Its always fun to remember our youth and the fun fads that influenced us. Thanks for your nice comments too..
I loved the photos. I have never followed the trends and fads, but remained with classic and romantic looks. I love the old looks though. Thanks for the memories. sigh
Hi Hyphen.....As you can see I did follow them. Don't much anymore just wear what feels good. As always thanks for reading. Take care...
Meant to say that Epi will probably find his way here. laugh
Those pictures are awesome. I wish I could post mine too.
This hub is very interesting. Voted hub ofc.
Regards,
Alma
You're right I had not seen all of your photo's. The fashions have changed over the years but jeans always seem to be in style. As for the hair, the long hair was nice and for the gals so many options but I hated the bee hive. lol My wife wears hers short because it is so thick and curly.
a wonderful and enjoyable hub, loved the styles through the years, but we never will give up our jeans.
God Bless
Welcome Alma....Thanks for coming by to read and I'm glad you enjoyed it.
@Fiddleman...tell your wife I wish my hiar was thick and curly. Women are never happy with their hair..are we? So glad you came back to see the rest
Hi Vet....I knew you would enjoy this hub and you're right we never toss our jeans away....
Marellen - omg! We wore a lot of the same stuff! How funny it is to look back - I loved all the photos! Just told my husband I was goingnto make the girls wear saddle shoes to school this year because I did at their age;) lol up and everything;)
Hi Real......I knew most of us could relate to this..well at least the women can. Glad you got a kick out of it...
Oh, I loved this Mar! Love all the pics too. My favorite is the one with your brother - lol! My favorite pants in the 1970's were a pair I sewed myself - too funny - they were striped seersucker material, elephant bottoms and a rope drawstring closure. What the heck was I thinking? And, ha, you reminded me when my parents living room colors were orange and turquoise. I'm feeling like pulling out all the old photos from the big ole storage chest :) Have a great evening!
Sharyn
Hey Sharyn....I remember pants like you described. I think the nautical scene was in too. I know I had sailor pants and who could forget those pee coats. Yep..you need to go look at your old pics...smile...
The beginning of it was a real trip down memory lane--Mary Janes and baby doll PJ's!! Loved this hub, thank you Marellen, and you look GOOD!
Thanks Paradise7. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the nice compliment.
Ha ha ha,
Sorry, I must add another comment. PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE COATS WERE MY FAVORITE. For me, they were always slenderizing and looked good on me since I'm tall. HA, I LAUGHED OUT LOUD! Thanks again,
Sharyn
Sharyn my pee coat was worn to home football games and kept me so warm. I'm short so it did nothing for me...lol
I love something vintage and all pictures above so great. From the pictures above I know that you are so pretty. From time to time the age was increased, but I believe you always keep young spirit. Thanks for share with us. God bless you. Vote up!
Prasetio
Boy, This did bring back memories. I am a jean and boot person, never liked dresses. I love coats too. Thank's for the memories.
Hi Pra......what a sweet thing to say. Thank for the compliment and I'm glad you enjoyed the hub....
@always......I just love my jeans, now I wear my capri because its summer here in Calif. Glad I could share the memories.
hey marellen what a great hub and excellent photographs. youve shared the whole transition from the 50s to the 2000's. extemely beautiful :-)
marellen, thanks for the memories. I can remember going through each fashion stage. I hated the body suits, but they were the fashion. I thought the pictures of each stage were great.
Lovely hub. It's always fun to read about fashion, and these pics are just so cute! I like the 60s fashion a lot although I was born in the 80s. :)
Welcome Carrie...Thank you so much for your kind comments.
@KKG...So glad you came by and enjoyed the hub. It was fun to look back.
Hi Om.....is it hot enough for you? Thanks for coming buy and your comments. Stay cool through this hot weather.
This was a fun look back. I am a couple of years older than you so definitely remember those styles although I did not comply with all of them...going bra-less for instance. :) Saddle shoes, peddle pushers, shifts (that I also made myself), etc. Cute hub! Thanks for the memories.
Hi Peggy.....I'm glad you had fun reading the hub. The only good rewards for being small is going braless. Plus that was short lived. Thanks for the compilments.
This was a fun article! I enjoyed seeing pictures of fashion throughout the decades :) Thanks for sharing!
Hi recipe gal..welcome and thanks for stopping by.So glad you enjoyed the hub.
I loved this one and seeig how fashions have changed gave me the giggles. I wish I'd kept a pair of my flares and my platform shoes, they made the platforms of today look tiny.
Thanks for this one, I loved it and vote all the way up and up.
Take care
eiddwen.
Eiddwen, I agree this was a fun hub. I don't think fashion today is changing like the 60's and 70's did. fun styles back then that put a smile on our faces.
Well you certainly brought back many memories for me, even though I don't live in the US. It's amazing how fashion throughout the years determines us so much and also unites us. Great hub and I love the photos.
Hi chspublish....I'm glad that you enjoyed the hub...I agree that fashion does unite us. Thanks for stopping by and your comments.
