Starting A New Holiday Tradition

Family Traditions: Don’t Forget the Old Traditions But Bring in the New…..
With the Holidays approaching, ‘Old Traditions’ can bring back wonderful and fun memories we have shared with our family but we can also start ‘New Traditions’ that will also hold fond memories too.
Recently, my daughter Megan and I have become cookie makers and have enjoyed doing this together. Although, this may sound mundane and no big deal, this small project has brought us closer and gives us time to spend together. Plus, we get to enjoy what we make.
This past weekend was an annual craft fair that we both like to attend.
While strolling through the fair to see new and creative vendors its also comforting to see familiar crafters as well. Plus, we also have friends and family who participate in this show and look forward to seeing them to.
A fairly new vendor who was at this show, make their own frostings and call themselves the, ‘Frosting Queens.’ We love this product and this year they have a new flavor; Carmel Spice. After having our first sample we knew we had to purchase this and it was cookie time.
On the way home, deciding what kind of cookies would be best with the Carmel Spice frosting, our decision was sugar and oatmeal. We had to stop at the store to buy the ingredients we would need to make the cookies and since Megan was busy that evening, she planned on being at my home the next day for baking.
Getting the aprons on and mixing the ingredients for our first batch, we gossip, relive the craft fair, chat with Mom and anticipate how good those cookies are going to taste.
Choosing what shapes she wants the cookies, Megan picks the cookie cutters from the bag and pulls out three antique cutters that were her great-grandmothers, making this ‘New Tradition’ even more special.
With the frosting at room temp and trying to let the cookies cool before we frost them, we lose that battle and start to frost.
Yummy!!! They are so good. Cookies for everyone! While we continue to bake and taste, we decide what other baked items would taste good with this flavor frosting. Spice cupcakes, gingerbread cookies and carrot cake also make our list.
Last year another frosting flavor we bought from the Frosting Queens was peppermint, although this item is only available in November and December, Meg and I plan on attending another craft fair soon to purchase this flavor, a favorite from last year.
While finishing up on the cookies, Megan and I decide that making cookies and other tasty delights would make wonderful and thoughtful Christmas gifts this year.
The tasty delights are:
Red Velvet cupcakes with peppermint frosting, Carrot cake cupcakes with Carmel Spice frosting, chocolate brownies with peppermint frosting, Pizzelles (Italian wafer cookie) with either frosting, Orangebursts cookies made with white chocolate and peppermint frosting are just a few we came up with for starters. Who knows where this will end.
So, many thanks goes to the Frosting Queens for inspiring Megan and I to bake some wonderful treats to enhance their delicious flavors and to share them with family and friends.
How a “New Tradition” was started.

Yum. I am not a big sweets eater so cupcakes and cookies are a perfect size for me. I love the peppermint frosting idea and oh so much more. And Marellen, your pictures are so precious. I just think you have done a great job with this Hub.

Mmmm...I'm looking forward to checking out the Frosting Queens' product. Sounds like it would be helpful when we need something special in a pinch, not just for fun times. I like that first commenter's idea on a help yourself button. Definitely looking for that one! :)
My mother and I baked cookies for many years together and she helped me make them at Christmas-time to give away as gifts. It was a wonderful time of visiting and laughing while working together. I miss her now that she is gone but continue the tradition. Enjoy your daughter's company! That time will soon be here!
Your cookies are not only interesting, but sound delicious. : ) Thanks for sharing your unique tradition. Souns fun and yummy!

Another great hub Marellan, it seems you had a lot of fun, not just making the cookies but eating them too. Yes a great idea for Christmas gifts, we can get too carried away with buying stuff that people often don't need. These would be much more personal and thoughtful.
HI marellen - They sure sound good, save one for me. :)
Marellen, what great new things to do at Christmas time! I loved your hub, and the photos. Life is so precious, and its such a good thing to find things like this that we can do with our loved ones. So glad you shared it with us all on hubpages. I too love baking when I can, and going to craft fairs with my Mother. Time well spent, I say! :)
Your hub made me hungry. Had to vote it up! : ) Love the photos too.
You know - I just realized that where I've been living for the last 7 years - there are never craft shows! I used to love going to them. The cookies sound like a great way to spend time with your daughter! My oldest just moved out....maybe I can talk her into coming over to bake! Lol great idea and fun - up and all that! Red velvet are my girls favorite!
Sweet, yummy hub Marellen! Happy Holidays!!

When are we going to have the 'help yourself' button? So we can share more than thoughts? Can you imaging exchanging deserts and recipes on real time sampler...through the screen? Nice pics marellen, Daughter make us get hungry. 'The season' of the end of the year is looming over us. Voted up and interesting!
